Those that know me well can tell you that I very rarely carry cash, and today was no exception.
In an earlier post, I mentioned that we bought some Trio bars at Costco (they're really tasty with nuts and berries, and full of protein) to keep in our cars for those in need along our journeys. Well, my drive home tonight presented such an opportunity.
The man at the highway on ramp was probably looking for the cash I don't carry but was so genuinely appreciative of the bar! He told me he loves getting food and held up a large baggie with other snack-type foods. His baggie contents actually looked pretty tasty - a smorgasbord of all things crunchy, salty and sweet. And toothpaste, which I thought was very thoughtful of someone, probably a dentist.
I felt good knowing that I've provided some good, nutritious goodness to someone who probably doesn't always know what his next meal might look like. For me, it was rewarding in itself just to hear his sincerity.
When I shared this story with Patrick tonight he had lots of questions like who the man was, where might he sleep, who gave him the other food, and whether I think he liked the bar. I felt like I let him down by not having answers but I'm sure he'll have an opportunity to personally give in this way soon, and will most likely have all those questions for the next recipient.
Hopefully we won't be on the highway on-ramp at rush hour so he can get some answers.
