So tonight our Weleda Calendula Oil became "magical oil". She's into fairies, pixies and tinkers so I knew she'd buy (believe) this story. I put the magical oil all over her chapped and burned face and convinced her to sleep on her back so that the oil can perform it's magic. And, boy did she believe in the power of the oil! My husband kissed her goodnight on the lips and she cried as if he told her fairies don't exist! I know, the nerve.
As I sat at her bedside tonight, gently rubbing her hair while being careful to avoid touching the magical oil, it warmed my heart to think about believing in magic. And fairies. And all those things that children just trust us to believe in.
This being the magical season, we've been talking about miracles and other things that are sometimes hard to understand or believe. Like the Tooth Fairy (my son has a loose tooth). Or the ongoing discussions on Heaven (same child is totally fascinated and wants to know what it looks like). Or my daughter's annual wish to be a fairy or butterfly (yes, really).
When my children ask questions about things I can't explain, I often turn to a simple line from a book my mom gave my son last year which was to help him better understand God and Heaven called "Because Nothing Looks Like God". The authors, Lawrence and Karen Kushner, tells us that "God looks like nothing...and nothing looks like God...but like the wind...we know He is there". For my children, comparing things to the wind - which we cannot see, but can feel - is very comforting for them.
Unexplainable things have happened in my life over the years. Things I can't always explain, but I've found peace in not understanding, and hope to be shown their purpose someday.
Right now, I don't always want to "know". I want to believe in magic. In healing. In love. And in miracles.
Disclosure: I have never worked for or received Breathe Right Strips or Weleda Calendual Oil. I do know one of the Boogie Wipes co-founder, Mindee Doney, and have for years, even before she was a BoogieMom. And even though we buy them regularly, she recently gave us a few packs of Boogie Wipes when we ran into her on our way out of town with a sick preschooler in the car.

Tissues with lotion, Boogie Wipes - all are important to healing. I think your little one benefits even more from the sweet treatment from her mom.

Thanks Daisy. If only our best wishes could heal them - they'd never be sick!
