While April 22 is Earth Day, there's so much fun to be had in celebrating concepts of reduce, reuse & recycle and all things green or eco-friendly that it's hard to contain it all to one day! Here are a few ideas that we're working on in our home:
- Pine cone bird feeder - just like it sounds, cover a pine cone with peanut butter, roll it in birdseed, then hang from a tree that you can, hopefully, see from inside
- Milk jug watering can - take a gallon or half-gallon container, let the kiddos decorate it to make it their own, and, voila...their very own watering can
- Pencil Cup - remember all those empty toilet paper rolls? Decorate them, then place them in a mound of modeling clay. When dry, the clay should hold the roll in place like a cup.
- Fancy Rocks - let the kiddos decorate rocks or stones they find on walks and use them to hold down napkins or other things that might fly away on a windy day, or as little markers for your plants, flowers or herbs in the garden
- Plant Something - reuse a yogurt cup, soup can or some other packaging to plant something pretty inside. We just received our seeds from the Sunflower Project so the kids are anxious to get them in some dirt. These little containers, once decorated and filled, make a wonderful gift to a neighbor or sick friend.
The EPA also has a great site just for kids with activities, information, projects and all kinds of fun!
There are so many project ideas out there, and I'm sure you have your own favorites. I hope you'll share them with us in the comments below, or send us an email. We're always looking for new ideas!
Have fun!
